Photojournalism
Photojournalism is another element that I feel I need to work on a little bit more. I have found that I excel in various aspects of writing, what one would consider "traditional" elements of journalism, but I have plenty of room to improve for multimedia elements like photography and videography. I definitely have more experience with editing photos from back when we had print issues than I do taking them, but I still feel like I have captured some quality photos in my high school journalism career so far. Here are a few slideshows:
Grocery Store - March 15
This was a collection of photos that I took at a local Target right before lockdowns started in mid-March. It was a dystopian scene; shelves were cleared, people were wearing everything from pre-pandemic attire to masks and gloves, and certain items were limited to one per person.
I took these pictures with an iPhone and quickly realized that sideways photos would work best. I did a little bit of editing as well to decrease the exposure and increase contrast, bringing out some of the colors a little better. I think that the significance of the events definitely outweighs the quality of the photos here, but they still turned out well in my opinion.
Hybrid Schedule Rally - August 3
This was a slideshow of photos that I took shortly before an August 3 Board of Education meeting that decided what the fall semester's schedule for returning to school would look like. This was a pro-hybrid "march" that took place before the meeting, and while my photo-taking skills are far from professional, I did well to capture the less-than-ecstatic nature of the protesters and the situation.
For these photos, I was able to use a nicer camera, which obviously helped a lot in terms of quality. Before the meeting started, I also grabbed a few interviews with protesters and got their points of view on the situation.
DGN MFP Tour - October 12
These were the best of the many photos that I took during a tour of our school shortly after a big phase of its Master Facility Plan had been completed. I got an exclusive tour and some early shots of these gorgeous new rooms, gyms, hallways, and areas of the cafeteria, which we posted on our social media shortly after.
The photos were all in focus and avoided inclusion of distractors like people in the background or objects that were half-in, half-out of the picture. I could've done better with finding angles that didn't include light that threw off the rest of the picture. This was the first time anyone had seen these new areas so these photos got a lot of positive attention on our social media.
