Review Writing
Review: The Weeknd - After Hours
This is another well-developed review because it is relatively clear and concise. I provide an analysis of lyrics, production, and themes from the album while also keeping it well below 500 words. I had to do research on the artist's past work and the meaning behind his lyrics and then publish all within 24 hours of the album coming out. Something that could've been improved upon was using rhetoric that appears a bit less like it was just pulled from a thesaurus; some of my diction was outlandish and did not fit the piece's tone, such as when I used the word "crepuscular."
Review: 1917
This review is one of the more developed ones that I've written. To write this, I needed to pull from other sources to highlight the techniques the cinematography team used to make the film appear as though it was all one shot. The piece displays a strong voice and has a relatively concise and easy-to-follow structure. However, it is quite long and could've been cut significantly while still maintaining its key points.
Review: Game of Thrones, Season Eight, Episode Three ("The Long Night")
Game of Thrones's final season was when I truly got into review writing, and I haven't looked back. I wouldn't consider this set of reviews particularly great writing, but it introduced me to a whole sub-genre of journalism and entertainment writing during my sophomore year. I think that this series of stories represents a bit of a baseline for my review writing development just because it was the first couple of reviews I've ever written. I thought that I did well to take the reader through the episode and analyze key scenes from an interesting perspective, but I definitely could have used more intriguing rhetoric throughout.
